Long Description:
Maman, the familiar
term for mother in French, is the title of this gigantic spider sculpture
created by the French born American sculptor Louise Bourgeois. The bronze and
stainless steel spider is 30' high and 33' wide. All eight legs touch the ground
and support the abdomen and thorax. In the central sac holds twenty-six spider
eggs made of marble.
Maman was first sculpted in 1999, cast in 2003, and purchased by the National Gallery of Canada in 2004. The giant spider has become an icon of contemporary art.
