Long Description:

The Temppeliaukio Church is a Lutheran church in the Töölö neighborhood of Helsinki at Lutherinkatu 3. The architects of this church were the brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen. The unique design a beauty of the church make it a must-see attraction for visitors to Helsinki. The church opened in 1969.

The church is built by excavating into solid granite rock outcrop that rises 40' above street level. The resulting space is covered with a magnificent copper dome. The dome is supported by a series of windows which brighten the interior in natural light. The church interior was designed by the architects and the 43 stop organ was manufactured by Veikko Virtanen. Due to the excellent acoustics created by the rock walls, classical music concerts are frequently held here.
