Long Description:

Eighteen artists have been chosen by the Springfield Central Cultural District to paint and beautify electrical utility boxes in the downtown area of Springfield. The first boxes were painted on Monday May 23, 2016 and the program will continue throughout the month and beyond. Many of the paintings will be sponsored by local organizations and businesses.

One of the first utility boxes to be finished was painted by Lorraine McAlpine. The utility box has sunflowers and a single red tulip painted against a blue background. The name of the sponsor, Tower Square, appears in black block letters on the front of the top of the sidewalk side of the utility box. Tower Square is a boutique shopping mall in downtown Springfield.

A painted utility box on the southwest corner of Dwight and Hillman Streets in Springfield, MA features a large array of doughnuts.

Long Description:

Eighteen artists have been chosen by the Springfield Central Cultural District to paint and beautify electrical utility boxes in the downtown area of Springfield. The first boxes were painted on Monday May 23, 2016 and the program will continue throughout the month and beyond. Many of the paintings will be sponsored by local organizations and businesses. This painted utility box was sponsored by the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Perhaps inspired by Andy Warhol painting of pop art icons, Andrea Newland has created a painted utility box featuring an array of doughnuts. The box has a green background on all four sides. The front of the sidewalk side has six rows containing 21 of of these tasty toroids. The street side has seven rows containing 23 mostly complete doughnuts. The north side adds 12 doughnuts and the south side has 18 more. As if this was not a sufficient number of doughnuts, there are a dozen more doughnuts painted against a blue background on the top of the utility box. In all, there are 86 doughnuts decorating the utility box.

The first boxes were painted on Monday May 23, 2016 and the program will continue throughout the month and beyond. Many of the paintings will be sponsored by local organizations and businesses.

Professional artist Arielle Jessop used a unusual and creative technique to painted this utility box. The street side features a rectangular brown building with irregular windows. A bed of flowers occupies the bottom of the painting and a tree sweeps diagonally from left to right in the foreground. All sides have a multicolored geometric sky. The north side features buildings and trees. The sidewalk side has a perspective painting of two buildings on opposite sides of a narrow street. The south side features tall flowers.

The top of the utility box has the name of the sponsor - WGBY, the local Public Broadcasting Station. Ms. Jessop's Facebook page indicated she also received support from artistic service Antler Editions.

Sydney Briggs decorated this utility box with a large electric eel against an electric blue background. The brown eel starts on the street (west) side and continues onto the north, east, and south sides of the utility box in a serpentine clockwise fashion. A yellow bolt of lightning accents the street side of the utility box.

Long Description:

Eighteen artists have been chosen by the Springfield Central Cultural District to paint and beautify electrical utility boxes in the downtown area of Springfield. The first boxes were painted on Monday May 23, 2016 and the program will continue throughout the month and beyond. Many of the paintings will be sponsored by local organizations and businesses. This painted utility box was sponsored by McIntosh Condos.

Catherine Burton as created an elaborately painted utility box. It's painted blue and decorated with red, yellow and orange flowers. Inter-dispersed among the flowers are equally brightly colored insects and animals, mostly red ladybugs. The space between the flowers is filled with curlicues.

The street side has a red and yellow flower and two ladybugs. The sidewalk side has a red and orange flower along two small pink flowers. At the top are the faces of two female figures, not the artists however. The northwest side has a single large red flower, a ladybug, and a tiny elephant. It is signed Cathi B and Nini. The southeast side has has the dedication - Condos at the top along with a martini glass. Around the meter are: two stick figures, a lizard, a coconut palm tree with a man sleeping at its base, a fly, and a snail. Below are more red and yellow flowers and a stylized butterfly.

This painted utility box was sponsored by the Armoury-Quadrangle Civic Association.

Whitney Weldon of Whitney Works Art Studio has created this brightly painted utility box. It is decorated with a multicolored arrangement of whimsical flowers against a green background. The street side (front) is decorated with overlapping brightly colored flower. The flowers extend to the sides and back of the utility box. The north side is a mostly a completion of the flowers from the front. The south side contains a single white flower. The east (park) side completes flowers that start each of the sides.

The first boxes were painted on Monday May 23, 2016 and the program will continue throughout the month and beyond. Many of the paintings will be sponsored by local organizations and businesses.

One of the first utility boxes to be finished was painted by Gina Beavers. She has said "I lived on Mattoon Street for 10 years which was glorious and one of the things they had was a cherry blossom festival in April and I wanted to commemorate that (with my art)."

The utility box on the corner of Chestnut and Mattoon Streets is painted a bright red to match the red brick row houses which line both sided of Mattoon Street. Cherry blossoms are painted against this background. The name of the sponsor, the Mattoon Street Association, appears in black script at the front of the top of the street and sidewalk sides of the utility box.
