Short Description:
Independence Square Fountain is located in the center of Independence Square which is north of Bank Street with the main entrance arch at the east end of Central Street in Basseterre, St. Kitts.
Long Description:
Independence Square is a actually an irregular rectangle about 350' by 410' at its longest edges. The green space in the heart of the city has a series of symmetrical paths lead to a beautiful painted fountain in the center of the square.
Several identical signs on the edges of the square are inscribed with a brief history of Independence Square in English, French, Spanish and German . The English inscription is:
Independence Square formerly Pall Mall Square, was renamed on the 19th of September to commemorate the independence of St. Christopher and Nevis.
The stone fountain in the center was erected to commemorate the introduction of pipe water from Olivees into Basseterre in the 19th century.
The stamp was issued by St. Kitts on August 19, 1992 as part of a set of four stamps depicting sights around St. Kitts.
