N 12° 06.375 W 068° 56.040
Short Description
Handelskade is a row of waterfront buildings north of the Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge in the Punda section of Willemstad, Curacao
Long Description:
Handelskade is the picturesque historic waterfront area of the Punda section of Willemstad. The row of 18th century merchant buildings along the waterfront of St. Anna Bay are similar in architecture to the buildings to line the Amsterdam canals, except they are brightly colored. One of the first Dutch governors decreed that all houses should be painted in colors other than white because to diminish the effect of bright sunlight on the eyes.
The stamp was issued by Curacao on September 27, 2012 as part of a set of 10 stamps in the
tourism destination series.
