Quick Description: 

Milton C. Long drowned during the sinking of the RMS Titanic on April 15, 1912. His body is buried in a family plot in Springfield Cemetery, Springfield, MA.

Long Desciption:

Milton C. Long, the only child of a Hampden County Judge and former Mayor of Springfield, Charles L. Long, was among the 1,517 passengers and crew of the RMS Titanic that died on April 15, 1912 after the ocean liner struck an iceberg and sank. Long attended both Harvard and Columbia law schools and graduated from Columbia in 1905. He was described him as a “gentleman of leisure” who was returning home from a tour of Europe, travelling alone in first-class.

Long disappeared and drowned shortly after jumping from the raised stern of the ship in an attempt to swim to one of the half-filled lifeboats near the ship. A week later, Long’s body was picked up by the cable ship MacKay-Bennett. He was brought back to Springfield, MA and buried in a family plot in Springfield Cemetery. A bronze plaque on the family grave monument identifies him as a victim of the RMS Titanic. It is inscribed:

The seas are quiet when winds give o'er;

Short Description: 

The last body recovered from the sinking of the RMS Titanic was that of James McGrady. He buried in Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Long Description:

James McGrady was born in Ireland in 1885. He joined the crew of the RMS Titanic on April 6, 1912 where is served as a first class saloon steward. He died when the RMS Titanic sank after striking and iceberg east of Nova Scotia on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to NY, NY.

James McGrady's remains (#330) were recovered by the steamship Algerine June 6, 1912. His body was transferred to the Florizel and returned to Halifax, Nova Scotia on 11 June 1912 where he was buried in Fairview Lawn Cemetery, on June 12, 1912. He was 27 years old.

The last body to be recovered from the RMS Titanic is listed as #330 even though only 328 bodies were recovered. Numbers 324 and 325 were never used.

A granite headstone marks his grave. It is simply inscribed:

Harold Reynolds is buried in Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was a 3rd class passenger and drowning victim from the RMS Titanic.

Long Description:

Harold Reynolds was born in Lewisham, Kent, England in 1891. He was an unmarried baker who was travelling to Toronto, Canada in order to work with a fellow baker who had previously migrated to Toronto. He when the RMS Titanic hit an iceberg and sank east of off Nova Scotia while on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City.

His body, #327, was recovered on May 10, 1912 by the Canadian Government Steamship Montmagny, which was chartered by the White Star Line to search for bodies in the aftermath of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. His remains were brought to Halifax, NS and buried in Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Halifax, NS on May 22, 1912.

One of the larger headstones, erected by his family, marks the grave of Harold Reynolds. A 4' tall granite block is inscribed:

Ernest Waldron King was born in Gort, County Galway, Ireland in early 1884. He joined the crew of the RMS Titanic on April 9, 1912 where is served as a clerk with the victualling crew. He died when the RMS Titanic sank after striking and iceberg on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to NY, NY.

Ernest Waldron King's remains (#321) were recovered by the cable ship Minia and brought to Halifax, Nova Scotia where he was buried in Fairview Lawn Cemetery, on May 10, 1912. He was 28 years old.

Everett Edward Elliott was born in Edmonton, London, England on November 15, 1888. He joined the crew of the RMS Titanic where is served in the engine room as a trimmer, a worker who delivers coal from the coal bunkers to the stokers. He died when the RMS Titanic sank after striking and iceberg on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to NY, NY.

Everett Edward Elliott's remains (#317) were recovered by the cable ship Minia and brought to Halifax, Nova Scotia where he was buried in Fairview Lawn Cemetery, on May 10, 1912. He was 24 years old.

Luigi Gatti is buried in Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was the à la Carte Restaurant Manager on the RMS Titanic and died during the sinking of the RMS Titanic.

Long Description:

Gaspare Antonino Pietro (Luigi) Gatti, 36, was born in Montalto Pavese, Italy on January 3, 1875.  He moved to Great Britain and married a British national. In London, he operated two exclusive restaurants, the Gatti's Adelphi and the Gatti's Strand. He was recruited to operate the The Ritz on the RMS Titanic. This was a  very expensive optional extra dining venue for the exclusive use of the First Class passengers.  Mr. Gatti was responsible for the complete administration of the restaurant and all restaurant employees were employed directly by him. Luigi Gatti died when the RMS Titanic sank after striking and iceberg east of Nova Scotia on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to NY, NY.

 Luigi Gatti's remains (#313) were recovered by the cable ship Minia and brought to Halifax, Nova Scotia where he was buried in Fairview Lawn Cemetery. He was 36 years old.

Ernest Edward Samuel Freeman died during the sinking of the RMS Titanic and is buried in Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Long Description:

Ernest Edward Samuel Freeman was born in Battersea, London, England, some time in the late 1860's. He was the Chief Deck Steward aboard the RMS Titanic and also served as a secretary to J. Bruce Ismay, the chairman and managing director of the White Star Line that owned the RMS Titanic. He died when the RMS Titanic struck and iceberg on its maiden voyage across the Atlantic Ocean from Southampton, England to NY, NY. As Chief Deck Officer his heroic actions are credited with saving the lives of many of the passengers on the RMS Titanic, before the ship sunk and Freeman lost his life in the disaster at about age 43 to 45.

Freeman's body (#239) was recovered by the cable ship Mackay-Bennett. His remains were brought to Nova Scotia and buried in Fairview Lawn Cemetery. His headstone was erecting by J. Bruce Ismay. It is inscribed:
